The Key to Success is Kindness
I’ve often heard it said in the business world that “nice guys finish last”. This is an approach, belief, and mindset I refuse to embrace.
Being mean and disrespectful works for some people. I have no judgment of them. Each person needs to do what they feel is best. With that said, being kind is what works for me. I’ve almost never been cruel to others, but in the rare instances I have I immediately regretted it and it almost always came back to bite me.
“What goes around comes around” is not some feel-good motivational saying. It’s a reality of life.
Why be kind to others? A couple reasons come to mind, among many others. One, you never know what someone else might be going through. Two, kindness is a hallmark trait and characteristic of some of the most successful people on the planet.
People have said to me in a condescending way, “You’re too nice.” I disagree with them. I’m assertive when I need to be. I stand up for myself when the situation calls for it. But my default way of being is to be friendly. Kindness is a strength, not a weakness.
If you’re still under the belief that being mean to others is your way to the top, consider reading “Nice Guys Finish First” by Doug Sandler. How you treat others says a lot about you. Leaders are courteous and respectful. Agree?
